In an art lesson focusing on oil pastels, students can explore the versatility of this medium. Oil pastels offer rich, bold colors, perfect for blending and creating gradients. We learn a concept of sun with contrasting warm tones of orange and yellow, demonstrates the way oil pastels can be layered to give texture and depth. Through learning to work with these pastels, students can practice blending techniques, such as creating smooth transitions between colors, while also refining their ability to highlight details like shading and symmetry, as seen in the sun's radiating rays. This medium allows students to experiment with texture and bold colors, giving a dynamic quality to their artwork.
In our after-school program, we dedicated time for the students to decide what they wanted to create for this year's Reflection Art Contest, centered around the theme "Accepting Imperfection." Some students have not yet finished their artwork and will continue working on it during upcoming sessions. This theme has inspired thoughtful discussion and creativity, encouraging students to express their unique perspectives on embracing flaws and imperfections through their art.
